Keep your feet cool and happy as you zoom down the road with the Louis Garneau Revo XR3 Shoes. Shimano’s SH-R088 challenged our notions of what entry-level cycling shoes could be. The SH-R088 offers expert-level performance at a price point that is perfect for club and recreational riders. When it comes to high-performance road shoes, we’ve all been told that stiffer is better. While this may be true for certain application, an overly rigid shoe reduces circulation and can leave your foot numb. Here’s where the beauty of Shimano’s Dynalast technology (driven by pro-rider feedback) comes into play, providing stiffness and flexibility where you need it most. The SH-R088 features a fiberglass polyamide outsole that is constructed to deliver power to the pedal, while still allowing a calculated level of flex due to varying densities across the sole. This promotes a smoother, more energy-efficient upstroke and will keep you feeling stronger for longer. The SH-R088 upper uses stretch-resistant, synthetic leather that is more durable and lightweight than traditional leather. More importantly, it is constructed in harmony with the Dynalast system, accommodating and adding tension to the toe-spring section, which supports a wider and healthier range of motion for the legs. The SH-R088 uppers also feature ultralight open mesh that not only keep your feet cool and dry but also work with the synthetic leather to improve the shoe’s elasticity. Finally, the SH-R088 securing straps aid in power transmission by being deftly incorporated into the anatomic last design. To control the internal volume of the shoe, Shimano has equipped the SH-R088 with two hook-and-loop straps designed to offer easy access for on-the-go adjustments. Shimano’s micro-adjust, ratcheting buckle controls the overall tightness of the shoe and allows for an incremental and precise fit.

With Shimano’s Dynalast technology and a hollow-channeled, carbon-reinforced composite outsole, the SH-R107 Men’s Shoes bring the power-transferring stiffness, low weight, and general feel of pro-level shoes to a price point that won’t cost you one of the legs you’d like to attach them to. Dynalast is the big story here, as it’s the same design featured in Shimano’s flagship SH-R321 model. It involves re-shaping the footbed in order to limit the “dead time” of the pedal stroke. Shimano claims . 56% more efficiency on each pedal stroke–a gain that adds up to figuratively save your legs over the course of a 40-mile group ride, 50-mile race, or a charity century.

While the Fizik R1 Uomo shoes are some of the most comfortable, high performance shoes we’ve worn, they may be a little pricey for riders who want comfort but who aren’t rolling to that start line on a regular basis. For this reason, Fizik introduced the R5 Uomo Boa Men’s Shoes. While they aren’t sewn from kangaroo leather, the R5 uppers are highly breathable Microtex fabric with nylon mesh windows for ventilation. Inside of the uppers is Fizik’s Superlight Insole that supports your arches and absorbs road vibration. The uppers are placed on a carbon-reinforced nylon outsole that allows efficient power transfer while remaining on the lower end of the carbon cost spectrum. The stack height is low and the outsole is engineered to drive power to the pedals while remaining flexible enough for comfort on long rides. A molded heel cup helps to keep your foot in the ideal pedaling position while minimizing heel slippage. To secure the shoes to your feet, the R5 Uomo use the Boa closure system. Consisting of a single dial with a continuous loop, it is micro-adjustable for the perfect fit. A hook-and-loop closure at the forefoot adds a separate adjustment point to keep your toes happy.

The Club Shoe Covers is a lightweight waterproof nylon shoe covers keep street or cycling shoes clean and dry. Zippered side closures with hook and loop tabs for easy on/off and fit adjustability. Water-resistant, reinforced, cleat-adaptable coated nylon soles. Simply cut sole with scissors to wear with cleats.

The Solara is built around the same performance fit as Giro’s top-shelf competition shoes to give you the same pedaling efficiency as the pros. It’s also made with premium, high-performance materials. Giro knows where to make slight compromises, however, so that it can make a high-performance road shoe available at an extremely reasonable price. The first area where Giro was able to lower cost is the upper material. Instead of using one of the costly microfibers that its much more expensive shoes use, Giro opted for tough, breathable microfiber. This is a more basic microfiber than Evofiber or Teijin, and it gains a few grams because of that. Also, instead of an expensive EC90 carbon fiber outsole, the Solara uses Dupont Zytel nylon, which creates an efficient pedaling platform, but isn’t quite as stiff. Many riders feel, however, that the slight loss in efficiency at the pedal is worth the gain in comfort that Zytel provides. Other features of the Solara include a ratcheting third buckle for precise fit control. You’ll notice this same ratcheting buckle on many of the pros’ shoes. Giro also treated the Solara with Aegis antimicrobial to fight odors.

That’s why Castelli made the Toe Thingy. The Toe Thingy lets your feet breathe while protecting the front of the foot from water and wind. Castelli’s Toe Thingy is made from durable neoprene fabric. This material not only provides insulating warmth, but it also blocks water and wind on the most sensitive part of the foot–the toes. The Toe Thingy is secured to the shoe by an aperture that encompasses the cleat, and to resist rips, tears, and general wear, Castelli included a silicone print on the Toe Thingy’s underside. For versatility, Castelli recommends using the cover alone on mild days, and as a layer between your shoe and full shoe cover during nasty weather.
