The Mavic Rush Shoes have many of the features of the top of the line Mavic Fury, but at a price and comfort level that is preferred by many cross-country riders. Not everyone wants to pay for or put up with carbon soles in their cross-country shoes. Cost can be an issue. Why spend big bucks on shoes that will inevitably get trashed in the mud and dirt. Another reason to steer clear of carbon is the stiffness of the sole. While a big plus for transferring 100% of your leg power to the pedals, it can be a drawback when shouldering the bike and hiking up a steep, slippery slope since it doesn’t flex easily. The sole on these Rush Shoes is nylon with glass fiber reinforcement. This allows for flex at the toe so you can hike and climb over rocky ledges without feeling unnatural. At the same time, the area from the cleat to the heel is plenty stiff enough to transmit power to the pedals. Like the Fury Shoes, the Rushs use Mavic’s Contragrip outsole. We’ve worn lots of shoes and it’s the best thing we’ve worn. It’s a sticky durable rubber and is beyond compare when treading technical, rocky terrain. Up front, there is a toe cap that both protects your toes and adds durability to the shoe. The upper has the familiar ratcheting buckle with two Velcro straps, forgoing the more complicated cable-and-Velcro system of the Fury. Inside the shoe is the Ergo Fit 2D insole. It’s a two-density insole with a high-density heel cradle. The insole is covered in an anti-bacterial material that resists stink. The foot is protected at the top of the shoe with a micro vent tongue. It’s perforated for ventilation and lightly padded to give a little cush, but not so much that your foot has room to move around when pulling up. The Mavic Rush Shoes come in sizes 7 – 12. 5 in whole and half sizes. The shoes come with removable toe spikes. There are two color options — Black or White. Weight (for a size 8. 5 shoe) is 375g per shoe.

Five Ten changed the flat pedal game forever when it introduced its Stealth Rubber Impact shoes. Not surprisingly, Five Ten has raised the bar, yet again, with its new Freerider VXi Shoes. To accomplish this, the Freerider VXi combines Five Ten’s Stealth high-friction rubber with an all new tread pattern for optimized pedal grip. For the uppers, Five Ten employed action leather in high-wear areas in order to promote durability. Further along these lines, a brand new sole shape provides extra clearance between the upper and your crank arms, effectively increasing the shoes’ longevity. To keep them comfortable, Five Ten applied mesh panels to the toe and side panels. Essentially, this creates a positive airflow through the shoe, keeping your feet cool, dry, and comfortable. And the low profile shape, mid-stiff sole, and slightly narrower fit make the Freerider VXi more versatile than a true downhill-oriented shoe like the Impact. However, the most notable feature of the Freerider VXi is its new tread pattern. Unlike previous Five Ten soles, which maintain a consistent tread from toe to heel, the Freerider VXi features a flat section under the ball of the foot. And although it looks different, the Stealth Rubber and increased surface area provide the same otherworldly grip that you’ve come to expect from Five Ten. The deeper that we get into Shimano’s new line of cycling shoes, the more that we start to wonder, ‘where’s the entry-level?’ Simply by going in order, the new SH-R088 Shoes fall second in the catalog. However, it retains key features from Shimano shoes well above it. Shimano had one key objective for its SH-R088 shoes: meeting comfort with quality. And not surprisingly, Shimano did not disappoint. The R088s feature a fiberglass-reinforced polyamide outsole construction that strikes the ideal balance between rigidity and comfort. Now, we’re all led to believe that stiffer is better, and in some cycling applications, this is absolutely true. However, it’s crucial to remember that over the course of a century, that overly rigid shoe will degrade your circulation. So, to avoid the eventual numbing, Shimano developed what it calls its Dynalast technology. This outsole system delivers power to the pedal, while still allowing a calculated level of flex. This is possible due to the sole’s variable stiffness and density that accommodates the movements of the arch. Furthering this power transfer are the R088’s securing straps. The shoes feature two hook-and-loop straps that allow you to control the shoes’ internal volume. Shimano has given these a broad and offset design that makes them simple to grab and adjust while in the saddle, should you need to make any on-the-fly adjustments. Controlling the overall tightness and security is a Shimano micro-adjust, ratcheting buckle. This system allows you make incremental adjustments with an elongated ratchet fixture. And when examining all three straps, it becomes obvious that they all work in unison with the R088’s anatomic last design.
