While we’re big fans of Shimano’s versatile M-series of shoes like the M065 or the more expensive M165, the Shimano SH-MT43 Shoes take the M series’ practicality to a new level. The MT34’s appearance — of both its upper and its sole — is not unlike a light hiking or trail-running shoe. The big difference, however, is the addition of a cleat plate into the sole, onto which can be bolted any two-hole mountain bike cleats. The cleats sit recessed, as on all M-series shoes, so as to preserve the shoes’ walkable nature, but the sole is more than stiff enough for efficient pedaling once riding. The upper is a blend of breathable mesh and synthetic leather, and the lace closure includes lace “keepers” to keep the laces out of your drivetrain while pedaling. The EVA midsole and the rubber tread below afford ample traction anywhere, from the trail to pavement to the coffee shop.

When mountain biking first clipped in, options were based on design parameters established by road shoes. This meant ultra-stiff soles, and traction lugs as a second thought — the result being wishful footing on slick roots and moss-covered rocks. On the other side of the spectrum, grippy gravity soles flexed too much for real trail riding. Giro’s Terraduro Shoes address all the shortcomings to make pedaling as comfortable as traversing obstacles by foot. The Terraduro features a robust nylon shank that pedals as an XC shoe should, but it’s combined with a Vibram rubber outsole with flex engineered in the forefoot to inspire confidence when side-stepping rocks and logs. The fit is secure and supportive thanks to Giro’s micro-adjustable buckle and two hook-and-loop straps. To keep things cool, perforations and a breathable microfiber interior let air flow, which is treated with Aegis for microbial management. On the durability side of things, a reinforced toe box protects from impacts and brushes off abrasions. Giro uses an EVA footbed with a medium arch to give the Terraduro excellent support.
