    Road rules

As the idea pops into your mind to hop on your bicycle and go for a little ride something occurs to you at the last minute. The flat tire.  Slightly dislodged chain…Hmm..Don’t forget the off kilter seat.  The list goes on and on.  Before I even get started, I’m worn out and the planned ride isn’t sounding so pleasant now.

To keep your bicycle ready for the open road and your adventures takes a lot of behind the scenes action.  In the real world you don’t just jump up and go cycling.  It’s actually more of a ongoing year round process of devoted maintenance to keep that bike in tip top shape.  This is an absolute necessity if you want your bike to prove roadworthy in the long run.

Make sure and check tires for both air and any wear that might need repairing.  Also check your chain assembly carefully looking for slips in the chain or gunk binding it up as this will cause you to have many problems along the way.  Another thing to take a look at is your seat height and make sure it is secured steadily to provide not only a smooth but comfortable ride.

Now, after preparing and performing any maintenance that might need to be done, you are ready to go.  Time to jump on and ride with abandon wherever your heart takes you, knowing all the while you have done the necessary work to ensure you have the time of your life!

    Hard work pays off!

    world bike gears

Professional cycling is a world-wide phenomenon known about by millions of people. Anyone hear of Lance Armstrong? Perhaps the Tour De France might ring a bell? In the arena of pro-level sports, this is a highly competitive, grueling and time intensive choice.  A world that one does not enter lightly without thought. In fact, most people who excel have spent a lifetime training and sacrificing for their sport. While the payoff can be enormous both financially and emotionally, the time and effort to achieve this level is great and requires a great amount of dedication. Not only that, but you must possess some level of natural athletic ability and the innate mindset of a winner.

Not everyone who strives to reach this level comes close to reaching the pinnacle of greatness, but for the few that reach the top all the hard work pays off in the end. It’s like anything worth doing, do it well, with all your heart and soul. Dedicate the time to master your passion and never waver from your training and mindset and you are a lot more likely to achieve if not greatness at least your personal goals. In fact, there is not enough room at the top of any sport for everyone and maybe your natural ability isn’t at the level of some of your competitors. But take no heed of limitations, put your head down and work hard and you might find yourself one day in the company of champions!

    The long and winding road

As I ride on down the solitary road the sights that pass are amazing, diverse and awe-inspiring.  Competing with the assorted tangle of thoughts from the day that race through my mind, I wonder what will win the internal tug of war for my attention. This struggle continues for an undetermined time until suddenly the road starts to smoothly unfurl under the wheels of my bike and I achieve what I crave. The road and I become one. The day’s worries, aggravations and deadlines slowly melt away leaving me finally at peace with myself.
People ride bicycles for various reasons. Exercise. Training. Enjoying time with friends. For some people, like me, it’s an exercise in therapy and the clearing of one’s mind in a natural way. Today many people search out alternatives to modern medicine to deal with things such as depression and anxiety. Some people are just looking for a way to come to a resolution to a personal issue that is creating havoc in their lives.
Taking to the road alone gives you the time and space to help clear the mind, allowing deep introspection and relaxation. Much like meditation it allows you to focus on breathing and movement, knocking down barriers that help to focus on the issue at hand and move ever closer to resolution. Getting into this habit can not only be therapeutic for your mind, but has obvious physical benefits also. So what are you waiting for? Grab a bike and take off down your long and winding road and watch as life improves. Maybe I’ll see you somewhere along the way!

  • When I grow up

    When I grow up

Many of us dream about having a brush with greatness.  What type of accomplishment this centers on depends on the person and their particular interests.  I know that I have woken up, smiling from a dream, hearing the cheering of the crowds and feeling the afterglow of happiness that many professional cyclists must feel during their career.  Eventually I awaken completely to realize that alas this was just a wonderful dream.

I makes you stop and wonder how great it must feel to reach that level of accomplishment in your life’s dedication.  For many cyclists these feelings are achieved after a lifetime of dedication and practice of their sport.  I have great respect for these athletes whatever their chosen sport be it traditional road cycling or the newer extreme variations such as BMX and off road riders.

To avid riders, every single part of a bicycle is integral to superior functioning and optimal performance.  Many spend hours on upkeep and fine tuning of their bike to keep them at the top of the field of competitors. This often starts by having a bicycle custom built to their particular sports’ specifications.
