Drawing inspiration from their top-tier P. R. O. Leader Shoes, Pearl Izumi’s engineers looked at how they could create an advanced shoe that possessed its same fit and many of the exact technical features, but at a more reasonable price point. The result is the new Race RD III Men’s Shoes, which rely on a sleek closure system, stiff composite sole, and Longitudinal Arch Support for a complete package that provides the all-day comfort and efficient power transfer you demand from your road shoes. The first thing you’ll notice about the Race RD III shoes is the centered closure dial at the top of the tongue. Called the Bi-directional Closure, this system was incorporated for several reasons. First, the top-mount allows riders to dial in a more precise fit than an outer foot mount, as the wiring draws both sides of the uppers together with more uniform tension. Also, by placing the BOA dial directly on top of the padded tongue, with wiring running through the top of the shoes’ uppers, it keeps the aesthetics clean, and reduces the chances of hardware becoming snagged or damaged in the event of a crash. A single hook-and-loop strap across the forefoot finishes off the closure, which aids in controlling the volume across the lower part of the foot. The new design has already proven itself in the world’s most demanding races, put to the test in last year’s Tour and then claiming the top spot on the podium at the USA Pro Challenge. For the sole, Izumi incorporated its SELECT 1:1 nylon and composite Power Plate. This is a lightweight, stiff, and ultra-durable sole composition that incorporates both Izumi’s Direct-Vent technology for maximum ventilation, as well as a concave shape for a super low 7mm stack height. Built-in arch support results from the concave design, which provides added comfort and a semi-custom fit throughout. Finishing details on the RD IIIs include Pearl Izumi’s SELECT insoles, EVA foam tongues, as well as rubberized heel bumpers for added stabil…
